New publication by Fay & Kline: Coworker Relationships and Informal Communication in High-intensity Telecommuting

Congratulations to OSU alum Martha Fay and Susan Kline for their new article entitled, Coworker Relationships and Informal Communication in High-intensity Telecommuting, which is in press at the Journal of Applied Communication Research. See below for a selected abstract of the study:

This study uses structuration and constructivist theories to examine the role of coworker relationships and informal communication in the context of high-intensity telecommuting. Teleworkers’ organizational commitment, job satisfaction, informal communication with peers, and coworker liking were examined. Coworker liking was positively related to teleworkers’ informal communication satisfaction with coworkers, and with their organizational commitment and job satisfaction. Complaining talk was negatively related to teleworkers’ commitment and satisfaction; informal communication satisfaction was positively related to organizational commitment. Coworker liking moderated the effect of teleworkers’ complaining talk on organizational commitment, but not job satisfaction. The buffering effect of coworker relationships is discussed as a resource for organizational members engaged in high-intensity telecommuting.

Welcome to the Interpersonal Communication Research Group!

I'm so glad that we have started an Interpersonal Communication Research Group here at Ohio State. By doing so we are continuing a research area begun by Don Cegala some years ago. I think we're all looking forward to stimulating discussions about all types of interpersonal communication theory and research. I also hope that graduate students and other faculty interested in interpersonal communication research will participate, on our blog and at our meetings.

Dr. Lee published in Mass Communication & Society!

Please join me in congratulating Dr. Chul-joo Lee on his recent article in Mass Communication & Society (2010) entitled, The interplay between media use and interpersonal communication in the context of healthy lifestyle behaviors: Reinforcing or substituting? This important study shows that the associations between television use and Internet use and healthy lifestyle behaviors are enhanced among those who talk about health issues with their family and friends less frequently.

Spring 2011 Graduate Elective in Interpersonal Communication

Dr. Raup-Krieger will be offering a graduate seminar in the Spring quarter entitled, "Health Communication in Interpersonal Contexts." This course provides an overview of classic and contemporary literature about the antecedents, processes, and outcomes of interpersonal communication about matters of health and illness. The primary goals of the seminar are to familiarize students with the major theories and research studies that comprise this integrated body of literature, encourage critical thinking about the state-of-knowledge in the field, and facilitate independent reading and research on a topic of personal interest. This seminar will focus on five general areas: (a) health and identity, (b) health and personal relationships, (c) health care provider-patient interaction, (d) interpersonal health education and prevention efforts, and (e) health inequities. This interdisciplinary course is appropriate for students from all areas with interests in interpersonal or health communication.
